Planning
Budgeting and Finance
How much income do you think you need to generate form the different source of finance? To be able to successfully produce your production.
How would you go about securing this income? Some of the ways to gain finance for a low budget film would be via;
Funding For Single Camera Productions
Funding is the most essential part of film making.
Funding provides resources such as money and finance for the production of film. As well as funding for screenplays that are ready to be presented to potential financers, to help with budgeting, scheduling, casting, and other expenses associated with finance and generating funds for the production distribution and sales of films.
Ways to finance your films
- government grants;
- crowd fund
- The Development Fund; The Development Fund is open to writer/directors and producers of UK film projects of all types of feature films. These include animation and documentary. Applications are also invited from writer/director/producer teams. Funding is available for the costs of developing a screenplay or the equivalent for documentaries such as research costs, writer’s fees, script editor or developer.
Funding is also available for screenplays, ready for potential financiers who are ready for, budgeting, scheduling, casting, producing teaser trailers/pilots, and other expenses associated with raising finance and generating sales and distribution interest.
The Development Fund totals £250,000 in its current round and applications are welcomed on a rolling basis. Awards will range from £2,500 to £25,000
- Creative England Fund
- tax incentives and shelters;
- private equity and hedge funds
- government grants;
- Crowd Fund. A crowd fund is a networking opportunities for people to invest in your film for profit. . One of the first things you should do is set up a website (or page on your production company site) for your film which people can visit, learn about the project and, hopefully, find out how to contact you and invest in it. To apply for a Crowd Fund, applicants need to log on to the website and create a profile and outline their project. State the amount of funding you require as well as a realistic time-frame for the achievement of this goal.
Crowd fund applications has a processing charge of between 3-12.5% for processing donated monies. Applicants can request up to £25,000. You can offer rewards to investors but make sure to calculate the cost of that into the total. Money is not taken from investors’ accounts until the total is reached. Most sites allow over-subscribing, so you can raise over your target amount. Investors can often cancel before the deadline, so add between ten and fifteen per cent onto your target to allow for this.
Pitch to anyone you even slightly know who is even remotely rich
To get things off the ground, you will need to take advantage of the like Facebook and Myspace, and firing off emails to any likely lists, friends, family, workmates, distant acquaintances anyone you know who might be able to invest.
If you are planning to make a campaigning film like The Age of Stupid, then you will need to sell the idea to investors purely on its artistic merit and profit potential. Simple invite people you want to give you money to come together at an event. Pitching in person to generate a large groups of potential investors is the most effective method of raising funds – Stupid raised £37,000 in a single night like this right back at the start of the project:
- Tax incentives and shelters;
- Bank loan
- Equity finance
- Wikipedia.org/funding British Council Films
- Juntoboxfilms.com offers funding for good movies, applications can be made at http://www.juntoboxfilm.com
Barclay’s Investment Fund Offers over 70 investment funds, application can be made via the Barclay website http://www.barclays.co.uk/Investmentsr Government Grant - Independent Television Service (ITVS)
- First Light Funding
